Should I rely on Ofsted?

In short, no.

Ofsted inspections are an important source of information, but they are only one part of the picture. An inspection is a snapshot of a school at a particular moment in time. Leadership, staffing, student cohorts and even inspection frameworks can all change, meaning a report may not fully reflect what a school is like today.

Schools are also incredibly complex organisations. While Ofsted rightly considers many aspects of school life, no inspection can completely capture a school's culture, relationships, pastoral care or the progress an individual child might make there. Context matters too. A school serving a highly disadvantaged community faces very different challenges from one in a more affluent area, and headline judgements do not always tell the full story.

When advising families, we encourage them to consider a much wider range of evidence. Examination results, progress measures, destinations after school, subject strengths, behaviour and attendance, extracurricular opportunities, staff stability, leadership, pastoral support and, perhaps most importantly, whether a school is the right fit for the individual child all deserve careful consideration. Visiting the school and speaking to staff and pupils can often provide insights that no inspection report can.

At Huntbridge, we look beyond a single judgement. Our role is to help families interpret the available evidence, understand each school's strengths and weaknesses, and make an informed decision based on what matters most for their child.
